Item Description

Panama Joe has a problem: almost everything in this temple can kill him, including a careless drop to the floor below. Montezuma's Revenge sends him deep into an Aztec pyramid one room at a time, hunting for treasure and the way down, and every new screen is a puzzle about how to get through it alive.

The tools of survival are scattered around the temple. Keys open locked doors, torches light up rooms that are otherwise pitch black, swords let Joe take out a single enemy, and jewels pile up the points. The hazards are relentless: rolling skulls, snakes and spiders, fire pits, laser barriers that flicker on and off, and ladders, ropes and poles that demand careful climbing. Fall too far and Joe is done, so the game rewards patience and memory far more than speed.

What makes Montezuma's Revenge special is that it is an explorer's game. The pyramid is a connected maze rather than a straight line, so you are constantly deciding which door to unlock with your one key, which route to risk and when to double back. That sense of mapping out a dangerous place in your head was ahead of its time and points toward the exploration-driven platformers that came later.

Robert Jaeger's original was a 1984 Parker Brothers release for home computers and the Atari 2600, and it has had a surprising afterlife: decades later, artificial intelligence researchers adopted the Atari version as a notorious benchmark because its sparse rewards and lethal rooms baffled learning systems that had mastered other games. The Master System version brings that same room-by-room challenge to Sega's 8-bit console, a test of nerve that still punishes a single bad jump.
