Item Description

Before Oshtor was a legend in the Utawarerumono saga, he was a young man from the border province of Ennakamuy with everything still to prove. Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten, made by Aquaplus to mark twenty years of its multimedia series, is a prequel set before Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, and it catches the swordsman fans of Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth know so well at the very start of his story.

It is also a real departure for the series. Where the Mask games blended visual novel storytelling with tactical grid battles, Monochrome Mobius is a full turn-based JRPG with 3D characters, a free camera and field exploration. Its signature is the Action Ring: combatants rotate around layered rings that show the turn order, and units on the innermost ring act most often. Staggering an enemy and knocking it down, or filling an overcharge gauge and using the Ascend skill, moves a unit inward, so every turn becomes a tug-of-war over the timeline as much as a race to deal damage.

The journey begins with an ordinary investigation for Oshtor's local lord, until a mysterious girl named Shunya tells him that his father, long believed dead, is still alive. Something about her recalls the man himself, and the two set out together for Arva Shulan, a country that appears on no map. The story leans on the series' history and rewards everything you already know about Yamato, so it plays best as a companion piece to the Mask games rather than a fresh starting point.

Reviews were mixed: critics praised the story and characters while finding the combat light on depth, and they were clear that it speaks most directly to people already invested in Utawarerumono. That is exactly who it was built for. If Oshtor's story in the Mask games stayed with you, this is the chance to meet the young man he was before Yamato knew his name, and a natural companion to the rest of an Utawarerumono collection on PS4.
