Item Description
A priestess armed with a sacred maple leaf walks into a kingdom eaten by a curse, and Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight never spends a moment explaining more than it has to. Created by Brazilian developer rdein under the Bombservice name and published by PLAYISM, this fourth Momodora game is a prequel set four centuries before the first, and the entry that carried the series from PC to consoles, reaching PlayStation 4 in 2017.
Kaho fights with that leaf up close and a bow at range, and the combat is the hook: fast melee strings, a dodge roll that slips through attacks, and enemies that hit hard enough to make every encounter count. Bellflowers serve as healing, while items and spells found across the world add new options to her kit. Every area ends with a boss, and those fights ask you to read patterns and pick your moments rather than trade blows, giving the whole game a lean, focused Metroidvania structure with a dash of Souls-like tension.
Kaho's journey takes her to the Kingdom of Karst, where a knight named Cath tells her the queen herself is the source of the curse. Reaching Karst Castle means gathering the pieces of a crest scattered across an interconnected map, with shortcuts and hidden routes rewarding anyone willing to poke at every wall. The story is told sparingly, in brief conversations and in what the places themselves suggest, which leaves plenty of room for atmosphere.
The pixel art is the other reason it lingers. Delicate animation and a melancholy, moonlit palette give its small world a storybook sadness that bigger games often miss. Reviews were generally favorable, with praise centered on how tight and intense the combat feels, and it is a compact adventure you can finish over a few evenings and then revisit on a harsher difficulty. If Hollow Knight or classic Castlevania hooked you but you want something shorter and sharper, Kaho's pilgrimage is an easy recommendation.
