Item Description
Drag a finger across the Vita's screen and a race track follows it. That touch-driven Track Studio is the signature trick of ModNation Racers: Road Trip, the handheld follow-up to United Front Games' 2010 PS3 kart racer, rebuilt for the Vita by SCE San Diego Studio for the system's 2012 launch window.
On the track, it is a kart racer with a little more strategy than most. Drifting, drafting and pulling tricks off jumps fill your boost meter, which doubles as a shield when weapons start flying, so every boost you burn is protection you no longer have. Weapon pods can be stacked to power up your attack, and the Vita version adds dual analog control and new weapon classes to the mix.
The creative suite is the real heart of ModNation. Mod Studio and Kart Studio let you design your racer and ride from the ground up, while Track Studio lets you lay down a course by hand in moments and then race it. The game was built around a sharing community in which players swapped their creations online, though head-to-head racing was always local, with ad-hoc races between nearby Vitas.
Reviews were mixed, with some critics wishing for online racing, but the creation tools drew real praise for how much they let a player build on a handheld. It is a colorful slice of Sony's early Vita lineup and a portable companion to the PS3 original's create-and-race spirit, best enjoyed by racers who would rather design the next track than just drive the last one.
