Item Description
Misdirection is the blue mage's favorite kind of magic trick: the spell your opponent cast still resolves, it just hits something else. This Mercadian Masques classic is a five-mana blue instant, but you rarely pay that. Instead you can exile a blue card from your hand to cast it for free, then change the target of target spell with a single target.
Think of what that opens up. Turn a removal spell aimed at your commander toward one of the caster's own creatures, send burn back at the player who cast it, or take an opponent's targeted draw or pump spell and make it work for you. Because it costs no mana, it can be held up even when you are tapped out after a big turn, which makes it a nasty surprise in Commander and cube. The catch is that it only works on spells with exactly one target, so part of the fun is knowing when to hold it.
This is the Secret Lair Drop showcase printing, collector number 1272, illustrated by Rovina Cai, in halo foil. Cai's moody, atmospheric style suits a card built on deception, and the halo foil finish gives it a distinctive shimmer.
