Item Description

Four players, one television and a shared world nobody wanted to leave: split-screen is what made Minecraft on the Xbox 360 its own thing. 4J Studios built the console edition of Mojang's sandbox around a controller and a couch, launching it on Xbox Live Arcade in 2012 and then on retail disc in 2013, with the game and its updates up to that point gathered on a single disc. For a huge number of players, this was the version where they first punched a tree, built a dirt hut and nervously waited out their first night.

The core loop is the same irresistible one that made Minecraft a phenomenon. In Survival you gather wood and stone, craft tools, dig for coal, iron and diamonds, and wall yourself in before the zombies, skeletons and creepers come out after dark. Creative mode removes the danger and hands you every block, turning the game into an endless box of digital building bricks. The console edition rethought the PC game's crafting grid as a menu that shows what you can make from what you are carrying, and it opens with a tutorial world that walks new players through the basics of mining, crafting and building.

Worlds on the 360 are generated at a fixed size rather than stretching on forever, which gives every map a strong sense of place: a bounded patch of mountains, forests, caves and coastline that you and your friends come to know block by block. Up to four people can play on one HD screen, and the game was also built for online sessions with friends over Xbox Live, so a castle started on a Friday night could turn into a shared project lasting months.

Minecraft has since moved on to newer editions, but the Xbox 360 version captures a specific moment: the era when console players discovered the game together, sitting side by side and arguing over who used up the last of the iron. On the console where so many of those worlds were first built, it is the way to revisit that feeling exactly as it was.
