Item Description
Few 2025 releases arrived with a bigger pedigree, or a louder landing, than MindsEye. It is the debut game from Build a Rocket Boy, the Edinburgh studio founded by Leslie Benzies, the longtime producer behind Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series, and it carried every expectation that name brings.
You play Jacob Diaz, a former soldier troubled by gaps in his memory and a mysterious neural implant called the MindsEye. Taking work with the Silva corporation in Redrock, a sunbaked desert metropolis modeled on Las Vegas, he is drawn into a conspiracy of rogue robots, mercenaries and corporate secrets while chasing the truth behind the implant. Rather than a sandbox, it is a linear, cinematic third-person action story built around gunfights, high-speed driving through the city and the desert beyond, and drone abilities that grow as Jacob's memories return. The game was also designed to sit alongside a building tool for player-made content, part of the studio's bigger ambitions.
Its launch became one of the year's biggest industry stories. Critics came down hard on its missions, combat and performance, while singling out the striking art direction and the moody electronic soundtrack by Rival Consoles and Stuart Ross for praise, and the studio spent the following months patching the game and adding new content.
That history is exactly what makes MindsEye interesting today. It is a snapshot of a high-budget new IP from a veteran of open-world blockbusters, with a slick Redrock skyline, a score worth hearing and a sci-fi conspiracy that wears its influences proudly. Play it on its own terms and judge for yourself; few modern games come with a more talked-about backstory.
