Few crowdfunding pitches have landed as hard as this one. In 2013 Keiji Inafune, the creator long associated with Mega Man, asked fans to back a brand-new robot hero, and they pledged well over three million dollars to make it happen. Developed by Inafune's studio Comcept together with Inti Creates, the team behind the Mega Man Zero games, Mighty No. 9 is the result: a 2D action platformer that wears its 8-bit lineage proudly.
You play Beck, the ninth of the Mighty Number robots and the only one left uninfected after a mysterious virus turns his eight siblings and machines across the world against humanity. The structure will feel instantly familiar: choose a stage, fight through to its boss, take that Mighty Number's power and turn it on the others. The twist is AcXelerate. Blast an enemy until it destabilizes, then dash straight through it to absorb its Xel for a temporary boost to power, speed or defense, and do it quickly enough to keep a combo alive. It rewards constant forward momentum in a way the classic formula never did, and the transformations earned from bosses, such as magnetic limbs, keep adding tools.
The soundtrack carries real pedigree. Manami Matsumae, who composed the music for the original Mega Man, wrote most of it, with sound direction and additional pieces from Ippo Yamada and single tracks from Mega Man 2 composer Takashi Tateishi and Masahiro Aoki. Beck's partner Call, a robot who can boost farther than he can but cannot absorb Xel, rounds out a cast built around the old blue-bomber spirit.
Its release became part of gaming history too. After several delays it launched in June 2016 to mixed and often harsh reviews, and the gap between the Kickstarter pitch and the finished game became a story of its own. Played on its own terms today, it is a brisk, demanding dash-and-blast platformer from a team with real 8-bit credentials, and an artifact of the moment when crowdfunding looked like it could bring back the games big publishers had left behind.
Mighty No. 9 is a Japanese 2D Side-scrolling Action game that takes the best elements from 8 and 16-bit classics that you know and love and transforms them with modern tech, fresh mechanics, and fan input into something fresh and amazing! You play as Beck, the 9th in a line of powerful robots, and the only one not infected by a mysterious computer virus that has caused mechanized creatures the world over to go berserk. Run, jump, blast, and transform your way through twelve stages using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies to take down your fellow Mighty Number robots and confront the final evil that threatens the planet!
