Item Description

Pinball on the Atari 2600 should not work as well as it does in Midnight Magic. Released by Atari Corporation in 1986 and programmed by Glenn Axworthy, it took its name under license from Brøderbund's David's Midnight Magic, the hit 1982 computer pinball game, but built a completely different table designed around what the 2600 and a single joystick could do.

The controls are cleverly mapped. Pull the joystick down to draw back the plunger, press the button to launch, then push left or right to fire the flippers. It takes only a few balls before the scheme feels natural, and from there the game rewards real pinball thinking. Five drop targets line the top of the table, and clearing them all raises your bonus multiplier to 2x, 3x and beyond. Once the multiplier is lit, the rollover targets in the upper corners can earn extra balls, so a skilled player is always working the ball back up the table rather than just keeping it alive. Two players can alternate turns, which makes it an easy game to hand around a room.

Arriving late in the console's life, Midnight Magic had years of 2600 programming know-how behind it. Computer and Video Games gave it 81% in 1989, and it makes a strong case as the best pinball game on the system. If you want one pinball cartridge for your 2600, this is the one to reach for.

About the game

Midnight Magic utilized the Atari 2600 joystick for performing simulated pinball functions, such as activating the flippers and shooting the ball. Moving the joystick controller down pulls the pinball machine plunger back while pressing the joystick button shoots the ball into the playfield. The left and right flippers are activated by moving the joystick controller left or right. Hitting all five drop targets at the top of the table increases the bonus multiplier (2x, 3x, and so on). Extra balls can be earned when hitting the rollover targets at the top left and right corners of the table when the bonus multiplier is activated.
