The orc captain who cut you down an hour ago now has a name, a fresh scar, a promotion and a taunt ready for your rematch. That is the Nemesis System, the idea that made Monolith Productions' Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor feel like something new when it arrived in 2014. Sauron's army is not a crowd of interchangeable enemies here. Every Uruk captain and warchief has his own rank, strengths, fears and memory of past encounters, and the hierarchy keeps reshuffling as they kill you, fight one another and climb the ladder while you are away.
Talion is a ranger of Gondor posted at the Black Gate, executed along with his family by the Black Hand of Sauron. He doesn't stay dead. Bound to the wraith of the elven smith Celebrimbor, he returns to hunt the Black Hand and his lieutenants in the decades between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The pairing gives Talion two toolkits: a ranger's sword, dagger and bow, and the wraith's spectral powers, which grow from slowing time on a bow shot to bending enemy minds.
Combat borrows the rhythm of the Batman Arkham games, flowing from strike to counter to vault through crowds of orcs while a combo multiplier climbs, then rewarding you with brutal executions that make nearby enemies flee. Mordor is split between the ashen plains of Udûn and the greener lands around the Sea of Núrnen, both full of strongholds, wild beasts such as caragors and graugs, and side challenges. The real playground, though, is the army itself. Later in the story Talion gains the power to brand orcs and turn them into followers, and planting a loyal spy among a warchief's bodyguards, then watching the betrayal unfold, produces stories no scripted cutscene could match.
Shadow of Mordor won wide critical praise and a long afterlife: Warner Bros. went on to patent the Nemesis System, which helps explain why so few games have tried anything like it since. The sequel, Shadow of War, expanded the idea, but the original is tighter and more personal, built around one grudge-driven hunt. On PlayStation 4 it still plays with real bite, and the rivals it creates for you will be ones nobody else has ever met.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a open world third-person action role-playing video game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, which takes place in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien's Legendarium. The game takes place in the 60-year gap between the events of Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. It is a story of revenge, slaughter, and mystery set entirely in Mordor, the Land of Shadows. At its center is Talion, an ordinary man who loses everything, including his mortal life. The game is set in a fully open world, and features various role-playing game elements such as experience points and skills. There are various ways the player can complete their main objective. Aside from the main storyline, there are various side quests and random events the player can complete within Mordor. The melee system is inspired by that of the Batman Arkham series. Getting into a good fighting rhythm, using both regular attacks and counter-attacks will improve the player's combo multiplier. A unique feature of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is the Nemesis system. Every enemy in the game has their own name, rank, and memory.
