A Formula 1 car no bigger than a thumbnail fishtails through a puddle of spilled milk on the dining table, three rivals on its bumper and the edge of the tabletop waiting for whoever brakes too late. That is Micro Machines 64 Turbo in a single image: Codemasters' top-down toy racer, published on the Nintendo 64 by Midway in 1999, where household clutter is the course and the camera shows no mercy to anyone who falls behind.
The game spreads 25 tracks across rooms you already know, from kitchen and dining tables to a pool table and a chemistry lab, and the props match each setting, so chairs, spilled milk and pool balls become walls, hazards and shortcuts. Track names like Cheesy Jumps and Cereal Killer set the tone. The garage is just as playful: Formula 1 racers, speedboats, monster trucks, tanks and even ice cream trucks, each with its own handling, plus weapons that reward a little planning over flat-out driving. Under the toy-box look sits a precise, twitchy racer where learning the line through every corner pays off.
Multiplayer is where it earned its reputation. Head-to-head races follow the leader, and any car that drops off the edge of the screen is out until the next phase, so every bump and every blown corner swings the score. Better still, Micro Machines 64 Turbo is known as the N64's only eight-player game: each controller is split between two people, one steering with the D-pad and the other with the C buttons, while the cars accelerate on their own. Four pads, four colored teams of two, eight people shouting at one television. Few cartridges on the system can turn a living room into that kind of chaos.
It is also a fun slice of Codemasters history, carrying the series' overhead racing formula onto a console that otherwise lived on behind-the-car 3D racers. If your idea of N64 multiplayer starts and ends with Mario Kart 64 and GoldenEye 007, this is the party game that beats both on headcount.
With a quirky mix of toy car racers and sophisticated gameplay, Micro Machines 64 Turbo guarantees to be a refreshing addition to the stable of standard racing games. The wide variety of vehicles featured includes Formula 1 racers, speed boats, monster trucks, tanks, and ice cream trucks. Choose from 25 whimsical tracks, which run the gamut from a kitchen table to a chemistry lab, each including the appropriate props to match the d¿cor. Such detail rich touches keep this game interesting, even to the most jaded gamer. Belying the kiddie car appearance, the game requires you to plan strategically if you want to emerge the winner, making good use of the weapons at your disposal.
