Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

The race starts on a breakfast table. Cereal boxes become the walls of the circuit, a pool table turns into a speedway, and the next heat sends you weaving between pencil sharpeners on a work desk. Micro Machines shrinks you down to the scale of Galoob's famous tiny toys and lets you race them across the everyday world, and on the NES in 1991 nothing else looked or played quite like it.

Developer Codemasters gave each kind of vehicle its own feel: powerboats, helicopters, Formula One cars, and tanks that can shoot the other racers. In the Micro Machines Challenge you face three computer opponents and must finish first or second to move on, with a time trial every three races offering a shot at an extra chance. The tracks are deliberately short and sharp, so races are quick, tense and full of near misses as you whip around corners seen from above, and drifting too far off the course sends you back to the track.

Then a friend picks up the second controller, and Head-to-Head takes over. Both cars share a single screen, and pulling far enough ahead to push your rival off the edge wins a point, tracked by a row of eight lights that shift to the leader's color. Claim all eight, or hold the most after three laps, and the race is yours; ties go to a sudden-death playoff. It made for some of the fiercest couch rivalries of the 8-bit era, simple to grasp and very hard to put down.

Micro Machines has a story off the track as well. Codemasters built it and Camerica published it without a license from Nintendo, while Nintendo was battling Galoob in court over the Game Genie, and that outsider status kept its sales below what the game deserved. It went on to launch a whole series across Sega, Nintendo and PC platforms, and IGN has called the NES original the highest-ranked unlicensed game on its Top 100 NES list. This is the cartridge where the series began, from a fascinating independent corner of the NES era.
