Item Description
In 1999, Mewtwo was the most talked-about Pokémon on the planet. Pokémon: The First Movie made the genetically engineered clone of Mew its villain, then something more complicated than a villain, as Mewtwo raged against the scientists who created it and questioned what it meant to be a Pokémon at all. For a generation of fans, that film was a first trip to the theater with Pokémon on the big screen.
Wizards of the Coast tied its Black Star Promo line directly into the movie, handing out promo cards to moviegoers when the film opened in the United States in November 1999, and Mewtwo, the film's headliner, was part of that promo lineup. A movie Mewtwo is the kind of card that carries a memory along with it: the ticket, the crowd, the moment you got the card handed to you.
This is the Wizards of the Coast Black Star Promo Mewtwo issued as a tie-in to Pokémon: The First Movie, in holofoil. It pairs naturally with the other early movie promos in a WotC-era promo collection, and it is a standout for anyone who collects Mewtwo across its long history.
