Item Description

Before there were full arts, rainbow rares or gold secret cards, there were sixteen holofoil rares in the original Base Set, and Mewtwo was one of them. When the Pokémon Trading Card Game reached English-speaking players in 1999, pulling that shining Mewtwo from a pack was a playground event, a card that matched the legend of the Pokémon itself.

Ken Sugimori, the designer behind the original Pokémon, illustrated this card, and the art carries the clean, confident style of the franchise's earliest days. The Pokédex text sets the tone, describing a Pokémon born from years of horrific gene-splicing and DNA engineering experiments.

The gameplay is a snapshot of the original game. Mewtwo is a 60-HP Basic Psychic Pokémon whose Psychic attack does 10 damage plus 10 more for each Energy card attached to the Defending Pokémon, punishing opponents who load up their attackers. Barrier asks you to discard an Energy card from Mewtwo, then prevents all effects of attacks, including damage, done to Mewtwo during your opponent's next turn. Playing it today is a fun way to revisit the game as it was in 1999.
