Item Description

The 1986 Metroid dropped players onto Zebes with no map, almost no story and very little mercy. Metroid: Zero Mission goes back to that same planet with eighteen years of hindsight, and the result is one of the best-designed games on the Game Boy Advance. Nintendo R&D1 and director Yoshio Sakamoto, the team behind Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, rebuilt Samus Aran's first mission from scratch rather than simply repainting it, keeping the original's Brinstar, Norfair and the lairs of Kraid and Ridley while reshaping almost everything inside them.

Samus handles the way she does in Fusion, quick and precise, with ledge grabs, the Speed Booster and a steady stream of upgrades that open new routes through areas you thought you had finished. Chozo statues now point toward your next destination, a small change that keeps the old labyrinth from becoming a wall. New bosses such as the Acid Worm and Imago join a much larger and nastier Kraid and Ridley, and a handful of mysterious Unknown Items sit in your inventory as a puzzle the game only answers near the end. Manga-style cutscenes fill in Samus's backstory along the way.

Then comes the twist. Mother Brain is not the finale here. Space Pirates shoot Samus down, and she wakes up without her Power Suit, stripped to the Zero Suit with only a stun pistol, sneaking through the Space Pirate Mothership while guards hunt her. It was the first time the series took the armor away like this, and the tension of creeping through ducts with no way to fight back is unforgettable. What waits at the end of that sequence, including a fight with Mecha Ridley, is best discovered firsthand.

Zero Mission is short enough to replay, and it is built to be replayed. A harder difficulty unlocks after the first clear, faster times and higher item percentages earn different ending images, and finishing the game unlocks an emulated copy of the original NES Metroid, so the 1986 version and its reinvention sit side by side. Link it to a Fusion cartridge with the Game Link Cable and a Fusion art gallery opens up too. Critics gave it an 89 on Metacritic, and it is where both newcomers and veterans should start Samus's story.
