Metroid: Samus Returns is Nintendo and MercurySteam's reimagining of the classic Game Boy title Metroid II: Return of Samus, released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2017 with rebuilt visuals, a reworked control scheme and a depth of gameplay that puts it among the strongest entries in the franchise. Samus Aran touches down on the hostile planet SR388 on a mission to hunt down and eliminate the Metroid species, and what unfolds is a tense, exploration-driven adventure that rewards patience, precision and curiosity in equal measure.

The standout addition is the Aeion ability system, which gives Samus a suite of new powers drawn from a shared energy gauge: a Scan Pulse that reveals hidden blocks and fills in the surrounding map, Lightning Armor that blocks incoming damage, Beam Burst for rapid-fire shots and Phase Drift, which slows time. Together they layer fresh tactical decisions on top of the series' familiar loop of exploration, upgrades and backtracking. Free aiming in any direction, new to the side-scrolling games, and a melee counter that stuns charging enemies and sets up a fully charged reply transform combat, making every Metroid encounter feel like a genuine duel rather than a pattern to exploit.

The game renders SR388 in 3D models on a 2.5D plane, and the 3DS's stereoscopic effect shines here, giving its caverns a rich, atmospheric sense of depth. Samus Returns was the first new 2D Metroid since Metroid: Zero Mission in 2004, and it made a strong case that the side-scrolling formula still had plenty left to give.

It also set the stage for Metroid Dread: the partnership between series producer Yoshio Sakamoto and MercurySteam continued on the Nintendo Switch in 2021, carrying forward the renewed commitment to the 2D Metroid formula that began here. For anyone who loves atmospheric, challenge-forward action-platformers, it remains a demanding and rewarding take on Samus's hunt on SR388.
