Item Description

Few Nintendo games have faced a rougher welcome than Metroid Prime: Federation Force. Its 2015 reveal drew a storm of criticism from fans who had wanted a new Samus adventure, yet the game that actually arrived turned out to be a far more interesting curiosity than its reputation suggests. Producer Kensuke Tanabe had wanted since Metroid Prime 3: Corruption to show the Metroid universe through the eyes of the Galactic Federation's rank-and-file soldiers, and Next Level Games built exactly that.

Set after the events of Corruption, the campaign drops the elite Federation Force marines, led by General Alex Miles, into the Bermuda System, where the Space Pirates have acquired technology that makes their troops grow to enormous size. Across missions on the planets Excelcion, Bion and Talvania, your squad pilots compact Mechs designed by Retro Studios, the team behind the Prime trilogy, hunting down the cloaking generators that hide the Pirate battleship Doomseye. Samus Aran appears in a supporting role, and the story builds toward a confrontation fans will want to see for themselves.

The real hook is teamwork. Before each mission you choose a loadout of weapons and support tools, including returning Super Missiles and a healing device for medics, but heavier gear slows you down, so balancing a squad is part of the strategy. MODs let you tune each Mech further. The game was built around four-player co-op and also supports solo play, with gyro aiming on every 3DS and the C-Stick on New 3DS models. Blast Ball, a frantic three-on-three soccer game played with cannon shots, is a fun bonus. Online play ended with the 3DS network, so co-op today is local.

Federation Force also hides one of the most intriguing loose threads in the series: a post-credits scene that points toward the bounty hunter Sylux, a character the main series returned to in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. For Metroid completionists, it is the most unusual chapter of the Prime saga and well worth a second look.
