Eighteen years after Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and long after a simple logo at E3 2017 set fans buzzing, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond finally put players back behind Samus Aran's visor. The road was famously bumpy: Nintendo publicly restarted development in 2019 and handed the project to Retro Studios, the Texas team that created the original Prime trilogy, and the game that emerged in December 2025 is unmistakably theirs.

A clash with her longtime rival Sylux, the Federation-hating bounty hunter first seen in Metroid Prime Hunters, ends in an accident that strands Samus on Viewros, a planet once home to the vanished Lamorn civilization. Getting home means unlocking what the Lamorn left behind, and scanning is still the soul of Prime: ruins, murals and creatures all yield lore, while the overgrown jungles of Fury Green set a moody, isolated tone the series does better than anyone.

Beyond adds two big new ideas. Samus's psychic abilities let her steer a charged shot in flight, manipulate distant mechanisms and reveal hidden platforms, adding a puzzle layer to the familiar beam-and-visor toolkit. Between regions, the desert hub of Sol Valley is crossed on the Vi-O-La, a powered motorcycle that boosts and fights. Samus also fights alongside Galactic Federation allies this time, including engineer Myles MacKenzie, which gives a famously solitary series a new kind of company. On Switch 2, the game offers a choice of 4K at 60 frames per second or 1080p at 120, and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls bring precise, PC-style aiming to a Prime game for the first time.

Critics praised the atmosphere, art direction and a soundtrack from longtime Metroid composers Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano, though reviewers split on the chatty companions and the open stretches of desert. When Beyond drops you into its labyrinths of ruins and machinery, it feels like classic Prime, and it is the new chapter fans waited a full generation to play.
