Item Description

Few moments in the Metroid series land like the first time the SA-X walks into view. It is Samus Aran at full strength, Varia Suit and Ice Beam included, except it is not Samus at all: it is an X Parasite wearing her old powers like a borrowed coat, and it is patrolling the same station you are trying to survive. Metroid Fusion turns the galaxy's most feared bounty hunter into the hunted, and the Game Boy Advance proved to be a perfect stage for that kind of slow-building dread.

The setup is pure science-fiction horror. On a survey mission to SR388 with the Biologic Space Laboratories team, Samus is infected by the X, a parasite that copies whatever it consumes. She is saved by a vaccine made from the cells of the baby Metroid she rescued years earlier, and the cure changes her: she can now absorb X to restore herself, but she inherits the Metroid's weakness to cold, which makes the SA-X's Ice Beam a lethal threat. Her armor, surgically stripped down, becomes the sinewy Fusion Suit. Guided by a ship's computer she nicknames Adam, after her former commanding officer Adam Malkovich, she pushes through the station's sectors, defeating bosses and absorbing the Core-X they leave behind to win back her abilities one by one, all the way to an X mimic of Ridley and a final standoff with an Omega Metroid.

Fusion was the first new 2D Metroid since Super Metroid in 1994, and Nintendo R&D1, with Yoshio Sakamoto co-directing, used the gap to try something different. Navigation rooms give Samus objectives, her own narration carries the story, and the station keeps changing around her as the X spread. Some critics found it more linear than its predecessors, yet the focus pays off in pacing that never sags. It earned a 92 on Metacritic and won Handheld Game of the Year from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, with Minako Hamano and Akira Fujiwara's moody score doing much of the heavy lifting. Linking it to Metroid Prime on the GameCube unlocked the Fusion Suit and the original NES Metroid in Prime.

For almost two decades Fusion was the end of Samus's timeline, until Metroid Dread on the Switch picked up its story in 2021, and anyone who survived Dread's EMMI chases will recognize where that idea of an unstoppable pursuer came from. Playing Fusion on the hardware it was built for is the best way to feel that original chill.
