Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. It also includes the inner cardboard tray. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Somewhere beneath the surface of SR388, the Metroids are changing. The jellyfish-like creatures that drifted toward Samus Aran in the NES original have molted into armored Alpha, Gamma, Zeta and Omega forms, each more dangerous than the last, and Samus has been sent to their home planet with a single order: exterminate the species. Metroid II: Return of Samus turns the series into a hunt, and Nintendo R&D1 built the whole game around that idea.
A counter on the screen tracks how many Metroids are still alive, and every kill matters. Clear out the creatures in one part of the caverns and the planet shudders, the deadly liquid blocking the way drains lower, and a deeper layer of SR388 opens up. That steady descent gives the game a sense of momentum quite different from the first game's sprawl. Samus also picks up some of the series' most important tools for the first time here: the Spider Ball, which lets her roll along walls and ceilings in Morph Ball form, the Space Jump, and the Spazer and Plasma beams. Even her look changed for good. The Varia Suit's oversized shoulder pads were introduced so players could tell the upgrade apart on a monochrome screen, and they have been part of her silhouette ever since.
The Game Boy's small green-gray screen works in the game's favor. The camera stays close to Samus, so a Zeta Metroid swooping in from off-screen is a real jolt, and Ryoji Yoshitomi's sparse, eerie music leans on atmosphere more than melody, making the caves feel isolated and alien. In place of the NES game's long passwords, progress is kept at save points scattered through the planet, which makes the long descent far more approachable.
Its biggest legacy is the ending. After the Queen Metroid falls, Samus finds a single egg, and the hatchling that emerges imprints on her as its mother. She spares it, and that choice sets up the story of Super Metroid, which picks up right where this game leaves off. Nintendo later remade it as Metroid: Samus Returns on the 3DS, but the original cartridge is where that story first played out: just Samus, a planet full of caves and a countdown to the last Metroid.
A Sinister Planet Threatens the Galaxy! Battle through a sprawling underworld, seeking out every last Metroid, and build up your arsenal by discovering mysterious artefacts. Enjoy new abilities like the Spider Ball, and powerful new weapons like the Plasma Beam, as you attempt to eradicate the Metroids once and for all.
