Item Description

Pull on the gas mask, wipe the grime from a cracked visor, glance at the wristwatch to see how many minutes of filter are left: few shooters make survival feel as physical as Metro: Last Light. 4A Games' 2013 sequel to Metro 2033 returns to the tunnels beneath a nuclear-ruined Moscow, where the last survivors live in subway stations turned into tiny, quarrelling nations, and puts you back in the boots of Artyom, now a Ranger of the Order, a year after the missile strike that ended the first game.

The mission begins as a hunt for the last surviving Dark One, one of the mysterious psychic beings Artyom believed he had wiped out, and it quickly drags him into a war between the neo-Nazi Fourth Reich and the communist Red Line, with the secrets of the military bunker D6 at stake. Along the way he crosses paths with the mystic Khan, the Red Line soldier Pavel and the Ranger sniper Anna. The stations between battles are full of overheard conversations, traders, stage shows and families getting by, which makes the Metro feel lived in rather than staged.

Bullets are scarce, and the military-grade rounds that serve as the Metro's currency can also be loaded into your gun when things go badly, which turns every desperate shot into a purchase you didn't plan to make. Most encounters can be handled quietly, unscrewing light bulbs and slipping through shadows for lethal or non-lethal takedowns, or loudly with up to three weapons at a time. A hand-crank charger keeps the flashlight alive, and on the poisoned surface the mask fogs, cracks and runs low on air while mutants hunt across the ruins. Small choices you barely notice, such as sparing an enemy or pausing to listen, quietly shape which ending you see.

Critics praised its atmosphere and storytelling, and it is the bridge between 2033 and Metro Exodus, drawn from the world of Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels. The Limited Edition was the launch release Deep Silver paired with Ranger Mode, the hardcore setting that strips away the HUD and makes ammunition and health even more precious, and the mode many fans consider the definitive way to play. On the Xbox 360 it shows how much dread a last-generation shooter could wring out of darkness, a flickering bulb and one more filter.

About the game

Based on the Russian novel Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro: Last Light is a post-apocalyptic horror first-person shooter that serves as a new chapter in the Metro saga and is the sequel to Metro 2033. Like its predecessor, the game is a primarily story-driven shooter with heavy stealth elements. Artyom may carry up to three weapons at a time, however bullets are scarce and valuable to the point that higher grade bullets are, in fact, the Metro's currency. When dealing with armed opponents, stealth is encouraged and it is wise to save ammunition for the many mutant creatures encountered in combat. In many situations the player can choose between straightforward shooting and stealth, also having the option for lethal or non-lethal enemy takedowns.
