Item Description

Ask a room full of arcade veterans which run-and-gun game has the most lovingly animated sprites ever drawn, and Metal Slug will come up within seconds. Every soldier, tank and bystander in this series moves with hand-drawn detail and slapstick timing, from Rebel Army grunts who panic and flee when the shooting starts to the bearded prisoners who salute and hand over a weapon after you cut them loose. Metal Slug Anthology gathers the series' first seven arcade games on one Wii disc: Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5 and Metal Slug 6.

The formula is simple and endlessly satisfying: push right, shoot everything, rescue the POWs and survive bosses that fill the screen. Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving lead the Regular Army against General Morden's Rebel Army, with Eri Kasamoto and Fio Germi joining the squad from Metal Slug 2 onward. Pickups like the Heavy Machine Gun, Rocket Launcher, Flame Shot and Shotgun turn you into a one-person demolition crew, and climbing into the SV-001, the Metal Slug tank itself, lets you plow through enemy lines with a cannon and a vulcan gun. Bring a second player along and the firepower, and the mayhem, doubles.

Playing the series in order is half the fun of this collection. Metal Slug 2 brought Martian invaders and mummy transformations into the war, and Metal Slug X reworked that game with remixed stages and far less slowdown. Metal Slug 3, the entry many fans consider the high point of the series, branches into multiple routes, turns your soldier into a shambling zombie if the wrong enemy gets hold of you, and builds to a final mission that keeps escalating long past where you expect it to end. Metal Slug 4 introduced new recruits Nadia and Trevor, and Metal Slug 6 drafted Ralf and Clark from The King of Fighters into the fight.

The series began in 1996 at Nazca, a small studio of former Irem developers, on SNK's Neo Geo arcade hardware, and for years playing these games at home meant an expensive Neo Geo console or a long hunt for individual ports. Anthology, released to mark the series' tenth anniversary, puts the whole classic run on a single disc for a Nintendo console, ready for two players on the same couch. For anyone who spent their quarters on these cabinets, it is the most convenient way to work through the entire golden era of Metal Slug in one sitting.
