Item Description

Every Metal Slug enemy dies with a scream, a flail or a panicked sprint, and every explosion is drawn by hand. That obsessive, frame-by-frame sprite work is what made SNK's run-and-gun series legendary in arcades, and Metal Slug Anthology gathers its first decade onto a single PSP disc: Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5 and Metal Slug 6, seven arcade games released to celebrate the series' 10th anniversary.

The formula is beautifully simple. Marco, Tarma, Eri and Fio blast their way through General Morden's Rebel Army with a pistol, grenades and whatever power-ups they can grab, like the Heavy Machine Gun that turns every stage into a shooting gallery. Bearded POWs wait to be freed in exchange for supplies, and the Metal Slug tank itself is the star of the show, joined in later games by camels, jets and other ridiculous vehicles. Bosses are enormous, screen-filling machines, and the humor never lets up.

Following the series game by game is half the fun here. The original Metal Slug, created by Nazca Corporation in 1996, set the tone with its tank and its comic war-movie style. Metal Slug 2 added Eri and Fio to the squad along with gag transformations, such as being turned into a mummy, and Metal Slug X reworked that game into the version many players prefer. Metal Slug 3 is widely seen as the series' peak, with branching routes and an extraordinary final mission, while Metal Slug 4 and 5 carried the torch into the 2000s, and Metal Slug 6 brought in guest fighters Ralf and Clark from SNK's Ikari Warriors and King of Fighters lineage.

These games were built around two-player arcade co-op and quarters that disappeared fast, and their difficulty still bites. Having all seven together lets you see how the series evolved, compare Metal Slug 2 with its X remix side by side, and take Metal Slug 3's marathon final stage on the go, without needing a Neo Geo or a pocket full of change.
