Item Description

A man wakes from a nine-year coma in a Cyprus hospital just as soldiers arrive to finish the job, and from that feverish opening Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain hands the player more freedom than any Metal Gear before it. Developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami in 2015, it picks up after Ground Zeroes and sits just before the original 1987 Metal Gear, telling how Venom Snake, now voiced by Kiefer Sutherland, rebuilds a private army and hunts the people who burned his old one to the ground. It was also the last Metal Gear that Hideo Kojima directed, which gives it a weight beyond its own story.

The series' tight corridors give way to two huge open regions, Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and the Angola-Zaire border in Central Africa, where a real-time day and night cycle and shifting weather change what guards can see and hear. A sandstorm can cover an approach; a raid before dawn can catch an outpost half-asleep. Every mission is a toolbox. Crawl in silently with a tranquilizer pistol, call in a supply drop or helicopter fire support from the iDroid, or bring a buddy along: the horse D-Horse, the scouting D-Dog, the sniper Quiet or the bipedal D-Walker. When a guard spots you, Reflex Mode slows time for one last chance to stop the alarm.

Between sorties the game turns into a management sim. The Fulton recovery balloon lifts unconscious soldiers, prisoners, vehicles and even livestock off the battlefield and back to Mother Base, the offshore platform complex where recruits are sorted into research, combat, support, intel and medical teams. Better staff unlock better weapons and gadgets, which open new ways to tackle the next mission, and that loop is what keeps players in the field for dozens of hours. Ocelot and Kazuhira Miller run the operation, Skull Face looms as the villain, and cassette tapes found in the field carry both story briefings and '80s pop hits you can blast from the helicopter on approach.

Its story is famously uneven, told in fewer and shorter cutscenes than earlier entries and in places clearly unfinished, but the stealth sandbox won enormous praise and is widely held up as the series at its most mechanically inventive. On the Xbox 360 it carries extra meaning. The console never received Metal Gear Solid 4, so this is where 360 owners get the climax of Big Boss's fall from hero to legend, the same open-world design running on last-generation hardware, and a fitting final word from the creator who started it all.

About the game

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the sequel to Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and a prequel to the original Metal Gear. The game has a complex story with long cut-scene sequences, but there are fewer and they are shorter compared to earlier Metal Gear Solid titles. Most of the gameplay mechanics introduced in Ground Zeroes are carried over: it is still an action game and stealth oriented but replaces the linear corridor design from most earlier titles with large open world environments that offer the player unrestricted freedom for the approach. The world has now a real-time day and night cycle and various weather effects that influence enemy behaviour, visibility and sound. Sabotaging or destroying certain structures can also influence other parts of the map.
