Item Description

It is 1984, and a man wakes up in a Cypriot hospital after nine years in a coma, missing an arm, his body full of shrapnel, just in time for the building to be attacked. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain begins with one of the most harrowing openings in the series and then does something no Metal Gear had done before: it hands you an entire open world and trusts you to work out how to conquer it. You play as Venom Snake, the legendary soldier known as Big Boss, rebuilding a private army called the Diamond Dogs to take revenge on the man who destroyed everything he had.

The battlegrounds are the mountains and villages of Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and the savannas of the Angola–Zaire border region, and every mission can be approached however you like. Scout an outpost at dawn, wait for a sandstorm to cover your approach, sneak in at night when the guards are drowsy, or call in a supply drop and go loud. Enemies adapt as well: rely on headshots and they start wearing helmets, strike at night too often and floodlights appear. Your buddies widen the options further, from the loyal D-Horse and the wolf pup D-Dog who sniffs out enemies, to the silent sniper Quiet and the bipedal D-Walker.

Back at Mother Base, the game turns into a management sim. Every soldier, vehicle and even stray sheep you lift off the battlefield with the Fulton recovery balloon becomes part of your growing army, staffing research teams that unlock new weapons and gadgets. Kojima Productions' Fox Engine was built to scale across hardware generations, and on PlayStation 3 it brings the same sprawling campaign to the console that hosted so much of the saga. Kiefer Sutherland voices Snake, the villain Skull Face is a chilling presence, and the 1980s pop soundtrack you can collect on cassette tapes adds a strange, memorable flavor.

This is Hideo Kojima's final Metal Gear, the game that closes the loop between Big Boss and the very first Metal Gear, and its story is as divisive and haunting as the series has ever been. It is also the deepest pure stealth sandbox the franchise ever produced, and the natural capstone to a Metal Gear collection on PS3.

About the game

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the sequel to Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and a prequel to the original Metal Gear. The game has a complex story with long cut-scene sequences, but there are fewer and they are shorter compared to earlier Metal Gear Solid titles. Most of the gameplay mechanics introduced in Ground Zeroes are carried over: it is still an action game and stealth oriented but replaces the linear corridor design from most earlier titles with large open world environments that offer the player unrestricted freedom for the approach. The world has now a real-time day and night cycle and various weather effects that influence enemy behaviour, visibility and sound. Sabotaging or destroying certain structures can also influence other parts of the map.
