Item Description

Rain hammers a floodlit prison camp on the southern tip of Cuba, and somewhere inside are two prisoners Big Boss has come to rescue. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is built around that single night at Camp Omega in 1975, and Kojima Productions turned it into a stealth sandbox you can approach from almost any angle: over the fence, along the rocky coastline, hidden in the back of a supply truck or, if you insist, guns blazing.

The prisoners are Chico and Paz, both survivors of Peace Walker, and the mission is the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Kiefer Sutherland takes over as the voice of Snake, and the shadowy Skull Face makes his first appearance at the head of the XOF unit. Cassette tapes found around the camp fill in what the prisoners have endured, and the story is notoriously grim, an unsettling opening act that sets the tone for everything that follows.

What it lacks in length it makes up for in depth. Ground Zeroes introduced the mechanics The Phantom Pain would build on: marking guards with binoculars, interrogating soldiers for intel, Reflex Mode's split-second slow motion when you are spotted, and an open base with no fixed route through it. Side Ops send you back to Camp Omega in different conditions and times of day for assassinations, rescues and sabotage, and PlayStation players got the exclusive Déjà Vu mission, a playful tribute packed with references to the original Metal Gear Solid. Mission ranks and hidden collectibles reward replaying it the way Metal Gear fans always have.

Built on Kojima Productions' Fox Engine, that rain-soaked night still looks striking on PS4. Ground Zeroes is the overture to the final chapter of Big Boss's story, short but sharp, and the clearest preview of how Metal Gear reinvented itself for the open-world era.

About the game

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It offers players new sneaking and traversal methods compared to its predecessors, as well as the choice in what order the story events take place by selecting missions by advance. The most important change for this title is the shift to an open world design with a real-time day and night cycle doing away with the linear mission approach of previous games. The game was originally developed as a mission for The Phantom Pain, but an extended development time resulted in director Hideo Kojima splitting the specific portion of the game as a stand-alone product so that players could get early access to Metal Gear Solid V.

First Time Reviewer!!! 5/5 Video Game!!!

Worth every dollar. As a prequel, it helps set up The Phantom Pain storyline, introducing new players to the game mechanics of the series and serves a a good learning curve for using tactics, stealth, and action all together!
