Complete in box: the UMD, the manual and the original case, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every game is tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Before Mother Base, there was a truck. In Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, building an army means knocking enemy soldiers unconscious and dragging them, one by one, back to your transport so they can be persuaded to join your cause. It is a wonderfully hands-on idea, and it turned Kojima Productions' first canonical Metal Gear Solid on a handheld into something more than a shrunken console game.
The year is 1970, six years after Snake Eater. The FOX unit has gone renegade under its new commander, Gene, and seized control of Colombia's San Hieronymo Peninsula. Naked Snake wakes up a prisoner, escapes with a young Roy Campbell, and sets out to stop FOX with nothing but the soldiers he can win over. The rogue unit gives the game a memorable gallery of opponents, including the cold-suited Python, the psychic sisters Elisa and Ursula, and Null, a mysterious soldier fans will want to watch closely. The story also lays the groundwork for the founding of FOXHOUND and the Patriots and plants the seed of the military nation Outer Heaven.
Recruits are not interchangeable. Each one brings a specialty, from medics to technicians, and a squad of up to four goes into the field together. Disguise is built in: a soldier recruited from a particular enemy force wears that uniform and can move through that force's areas without raising alarms, so choosing who goes in first becomes part of the infiltration plan. The cutscenes are told in Ashley Wood's moody, painterly comic style, giving the game a look all its own.
Critics praised Portable Ops for its story, presentation and faithful use of Metal Gear elements, with most of the complaints aimed at its control scheme. Its biggest influence came later. The recruit-and-build loop it introduced grew into the full Mother Base system of Peace Walker and, eventually, Metal Gear Solid V. For anyone tracing Big Boss from Snake Eater to Outer Heaven, this is the chapter where he first starts building something of his own.
MPO is the fourth Metal Gear title made specifically for the PSP and the first one to retain the series' action-based play mechanics. It is the first canonical outing of the Metal Gear Solid series for a portable platform, following the storyline of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Set in Colombia in 1970, six years after the events of Snake Eater, the game follows the exploits of Naked Snake after his former unit, FOX, goes renegade. The game also chronicles the eventual founding of FOXHOUND and The Patriots, as well as the inspiration of the military state Outer Heaven. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops has received highly positive critical reception from critics, and is often viewed as one of the best games released for the PSP. It was praised for its visuals, usage of Metal Gear elements and story, while criticism was directed at the game's control scheme.
