Item Description

Costa Rica in 1974 is a nation without an army, and that is exactly why someone hires one. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker finds Big Boss, a decade after Snake Eater, leading Militaires Sans Frontières, a mercenary force with no country of its own. When a mysterious armed group appears on Costa Rican soil, Snake and Kazuhira Miller take the job, and what starts as a contract becomes a story about nuclear deterrence, loyalty and the birth of the ideals that would one day become Outer Heaven. Hideo Kojima directed it himself, and it shows: this is a full Metal Gear chapter, not a portable side story.

The game splits into two halves that feed each other. Missions are focused infiltrations and boss fights sized for handheld play, and Mother Base is the offshore headquarters you build between them. Enemy soldiers you knock out can be strapped to a Fulton recovery balloon and whisked back to base, where they staff R&D, Medical, Intel and the Mess Hall, or join combat units you send on missions of their own. New weapons, gadgets and even your own Metal Gear, ZEKE, come out of that growing operation. One change veterans will notice: Peace Walker drops the series' crawling: Snake cannot move while prone or pressed against a wall, which reshapes how stealth plays.

The boss fights against unmanned AI weapons are the showpieces, huge machines built to be taken down by a coordinated squad. Up to four players could team up in co-op missions, and the game was designed so that friends sharing a room could take on its toughest challenges together. The cast is one of Metal Gear's best, with young Paz, the Sandinista siblings Amanda and Chico, Huey Emmerich (the future father of Otacon) and the obsessive Dr. Strangelove, and the cutscenes are told through Ashley Wood's striking, comic-book artwork. There is even an official Monster Hunter crossover tucked inside.

Peace Walker was later included in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, but its biggest legacy is what came after. Fulton extraction, Mother Base management and Big Boss's mercenary army all returned as the foundation of Metal Gear Solid V. Playing the PSP original means seeing those ideas the first time Kojima Productions put them together, in the chapter that turned Naked Snake into Big Boss.

About the game

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is an action-adventure stealth video game and is the third action-based Metal Gear title made specifically for the PSP. The gameplay consists of two primary modes: Mission and Mother Base. Mission are the actual action sequences of the game where the player must infiltrate an enemy territory or fight a boss, whereas Mother Base is an army management. Some changes have been made to the standard Metal Gear formula: the player is now unable to move or shoot while laying down and while pinned to a wall, making Peace Walker the first game since Metal Gear to lack any crawling ability.
