Item Description
Three of the boldest stealth games ever designed share a single Xbox 360 case here, and the order they come in tells the story of how Hideo Kojima kept reinventing his own series. The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection brings together Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, rebuilt in high definition and widescreen. For Xbox players it was a landmark, since Snake Eater and Peace Walker had never been released on a Microsoft console before.
Sons of Liberty opens with Solid Snake slipping aboard a tanker in a rainstorm over the Hudson River, then pulls one of gaming's most famous switches as the newcomer Raiden takes over for the infiltration of the Big Shell offshore facility. Its guard AI, environmental tricks and strange, prophetic story about controlling information still feel ahead of their time. Snake Eater rewinds to 1964 and sends Naked Snake into a Soviet jungle, where survival means hunting for food, swapping camouflage to stay hidden and grappling enemies with close-quarters combat. Its relationship with The Boss, Snake's mentor turned adversary, gives the series its most powerful ending, and its boss fights, including the long, patient sniper duel with The End, are still talked about today.
Peace Walker, originally designed for the PSP, moves the story to 1974 Costa Rica and lets Big Boss build his own private army. Missions are bite-sized, and you can recruit soldiers off the battlefield with the Fulton balloon system to staff Mother Base, a management layer that later fed directly into Metal Gear Solid V. Seeing it on a big screen shows how much depth was packed into a handheld game. Tucked inside Snake Eater are the MSX originals, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, so the collection also reaches back to where the whole saga began.
Taken together, this is a crash course in why Metal Gear became the reference point for stealth action: the paranoia of Sons of Liberty, the Cold War survival drama of Snake Eater and the base-building ambition of Peace Walker, all on one disc built for the Xbox 360 and its controller. It is the most complete way to play these chapters on the console, and a natural bridge for anyone who met the series through the later Big Boss story.
