Item Description

Solid Snake is old now. His hair has gone gray, his back aches, and the stress of a battlefield can buckle him at the knees. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots opens on a hero whose body is failing him far faster than it should, and sends him out for one last mission anyway: stop Liquid Ocelot, who is preparing to seize control of a world where war has become a business and private military companies fight on behalf of anyone who can pay.

Kojima Productions built the game for the PlayStation 3, and it shows in the way it reinvents stealth for chaotic, crowded battlefields. Snake's OctoCamo suit takes on the color and texture of whatever surface he presses against, the Solid Eye adds night vision, binoculars and a read on nearby threats, and the Metal Gear Mk. II robot, piloted remotely by Otacon, scouts ahead and stuns enemies with a well-timed shock. The early acts drop you into a three-way conflict between rebels and PMC soldiers, where you can sneak through unseen, play the factions against each other or open fire. The gun launderer Drebin will unlock and sell you nearly any weapon you can find, and new moves such as rolling onto your back or hiding inside an oil drum keep even familiar stealth situations surprising.

The journey spans the Middle East, South America and Eastern Europe before returning to the series' most sacred ground, and the boss fights against the Beauty and the Beast Unit are some of the most unsettling encounters Hideo Kojima's team ever staged. Raiden returns as a cyborg ninja and steals every scene he appears in, and Harry Gregson-Williams' score gives the whole thing the scale of a Hollywood war film. The cutscenes are famously long, and the story is woven so tightly into the earlier games that series veterans will get the most from it, but its payoffs land with tremendous force.

This is the end of Solid Snake's story, the chapter where decades of conspiracies, clones and codec calls are finally tied together, and it is still one of the most lavish productions on the PS3. For anyone who has followed Snake from Shadow Moses onward, it is the farewell that makes the whole saga feel complete.

About the game

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the final canonical Metal Gear game to feature Solid Snake as the main character. The gameplay of the previous games have been kept along with some new features, such as the ability to roll on your back and also to hide in bins scattered around the environment. Most of the story and the relationship between the characters are explained through cut-scenes with a considerable length, so knowledge of the prior games is recommended to fully understand the story. The game also features a complex multiplayer mode entitled Metal Gear Online with some original missions based on the stealth aspects of the single-player games.
