Item Description

Solid Snake was never supposed to fit in your pocket, and Konami's answer to that problem turned out to be one of the finest action games on the Game Boy Color. Rather than shrinking the PlayStation game, Konami Computer Entertainment Japan wrote a brand-new mission for the handheld. Known in Japan as Metal Gear: Ghost Babel and directed by Shinta Nojiri, it returns to the overhead view of the original MSX2 Metal Gear games and tells an alternate story set seven years after the Outer Heaven uprising.

A prototype walker called Metal Gear Gander has been seized by the Gindra Liberation Front, a rebel army in Central Africa led by the mercenary Augustine Eguabon, and Snake is pulled out of retirement in Alaska to infiltrate Galuade, the fortress that once housed Outer Heaven. Standing in his way are the surviving members of the Black Chamber special forces unit: Black Arts Viper, Slasher Hawk, Marionette Owl and Pyro Bison, a gallery of theatrical villains in proper Metal Gear tradition. Sgt. Chris Jenner, a Delta Force survivor, takes the ally role, while Colonel Campbell and Mei Ling are a Codec call away.

What makes it work is how much of the PlayStation game's stealth language survives the move to 2D. Snake presses against walls and knocks to lure a guard away, aims in eight directions and reads a scaled-down Soliton Radar as he picks his way through thirteen stages that are bigger and more open than the old 8-bit levels. Finish the campaign and every stage unlocks extra challenges. On top of that sit 180 VR Training missions across sneaking, weapon and advanced categories, plus a two-player Vs. Battle mode over a Game Link Cable, the first multiplayer the series ever offered.

Critics were stunned in 2000. IGN gave it a perfect 10, GameSpot a 9.4, and it finished as the highest-rated Game Boy Color game on GameRankings. Today it plays like a lost Metal Gear chapter that a lot of series fans never knew existed: a complete Snake adventure with Codec banter, boss duels and late-game twists, built to show what the little handheld could do in the right hands.
