Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction is one of those games that absolutely nailed its premise — drop a gun-for-hire into a massive open-world warzone in North Korea and let chaos do the rest. Released in 2005 and developed by Pandemic Studios, it arrived at a time when open-world action games were just beginning to find their footing, and Mercenaries ran with the concept in the most satisfying way possible. You're working contracts, hunting down a deck of 52 playing-card-ranked targets (a cheeky nod to the real-world Most Wanted deck of the early 2000s), and calling in air strikes and supply drops like you own the place. The sheer freedom to level a building, hijack a tank, or negotiate with rival factions gave it a personality that set it apart from everything else on the shelf.
The game lets you choose from three mercenaries — each with their own stats and specialty — and then turns you loose across a sprawling map filled with North Korean regulars, Russian mafia, South Korean forces, and Allied troops, all with shifting allegiances you'll need to manage. The faction system was genuinely ahead of its time, rewarding players who thought tactically about who they were angering and who they were keeping sweet. Vehicles are everywhere and almost all of them are yours for the taking, which keeps the pacing fast and the options wide open.
On the original Xbox, Mercenaries looks and runs at its best from that generation, with the hardware handling the explosive sandbox without missing a beat.
