Item Description
Mercenaries hands you a deck of cards and a war zone and lets you decide how to work through both. Pandemic Studios' open-world action game drops a gun-for-hire into a North Korea in crisis: General Choi Song has assassinated his own father, seized power and cut the country off from the world, nuclear plans are surfacing, and a hundred-million-dollar bounty sits on his head. Your job is to collect it, along with the bounties on the 52 high-value targets of his regime, each ranked as a playing card, with Song himself as the Ace of Spades.
You choose one of three mercenaries, each with a distinct edge: Chris Jacobs can absorb more damage, Jennifer Mui is the stealth specialist, and Mattias Nilsson simply runs faster. Then the sandbox opens up. China, South Korea, the Allied Nations and the Russian Mafia all want a piece of the region, and the contracts you take from one faction can sour your standing with another, so the faction system rewards real thought about who you are willing to anger. Nearly every vehicle on the map is yours to hijack, from jeeps to tanks to helicopters, and money earned on the job buys air strikes and supply drops you can call in from above.
That freedom is what made Mercenaries stand out in 2005. Bring down a building with an artillery strike, steal a tank to bulldoze a checkpoint, or quietly capture a target alive for a bigger payout; the game rarely insists on a single solution. Michael Giacchino's orchestral score gives the chaos a cinematic sweep, and the playing-card structure turns the hunt for Song into a satisfying collection run.
Published by LucasArts, it was one of the most underappreciated sandboxes of the original Xbox era and the start of a series that continued with Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. For Xbox collectors, it is an explosive reminder of how Pandemic was pushing open-world action years before destruction-heavy sandboxes became commonplace.

About the game
During the last years of his reign, the North Korean president Choi Kim attempted a reconciliation with the country's southern neighbor, with the ultimate goal of reunification. However, his son, General Choi Song, and the military clique under his leadership, strongly disagreed with the old man's views. Eventually, Choi Song orchestrated his own father's assassination, took control of North Korea, and severed ties with the outside world. Eventually, plans of a nuclear reactor construction began to surface. China, South Korea, the Allied Nations and even the Russian Mafia sent troops to North Korea, competing for power in the troubled region. A bounty of a hundred million dollars for General Song was declared. This is where the mercenaries enter the playfield. Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction is a free-roaming war action and driving game with open-ended gameplay in a large world. The player can choose to control any of the three mercenary protagonists, each with their own strengths: North American Chris Jacobs can sustain higher damage; Jennifer Mui from Hong-Kong is proficient in stealth; Mattias Nilsson from Sweden can run faster than the others.
