Our grade: Near Mint. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Before Mirrodin fell to Phyrexia, it had a caretaker. Memnarch began as the guardian Karn left to watch over the metal plane, then slid into madness under the influence of Phyrexian oil, and the card plays exactly like that obsession with making everything belong to him. That story is why it earned a slot in From the Vault: Lore, the 2016 collection built around cards tied to key moments in Magic's storyline.
Memnarch is a seven-mana colorless legendary Wizard artifact creature, a 4/5 with two blue-mana abilities. For one generic and two blue mana, target permanent becomes an artifact in addition to its other types; for three generic and one blue, you gain control of target artifact. Both effects last indefinitely, so the routine is simple and brutal: turn an opposing creature, land or enchantment into an artifact, then take it. In Commander, a blue artifact deck with mana to spare can strip opponents of their best permanents one activation at a time. The flavor text sums up his attitude: "An imperfection in the perfect world? We can't allow that."
This is the From the Vault: Lore printing, collector number 7, illustrated by Carl Critchlow, in foil, like every card in the From the Vault series. Memnarch was first printed in the original Mirrodin set in 2003, and this version celebrates the villain at the center of that block's story.
