In MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death, the world has simply stopped turning. The planet has frozen in place, eternal darkness has settled over everything and monsters roam freely, and an old legend says only a chosen Machina Mage can turn the key that sets the world moving again. Five mages, one from each region, are summoned to the city of Southern Cross, and Estra sets out with her fellow mages into a series of labyrinths that stand between them and the key.
The mechanical partners are the hook. Each mage fights alongside a Guardian, a robot with a will of its own, and you take three mage-and-Guardian pairs into battle. Only one member of each pair acts per turn, which forces a constant choice: send in the Guardian to soak up damage with its far larger health pool, or act with the mage, the only one who can heal, buff and inflict status effects, and leave her exposed. Guardians can be rebuilt with swappable arms and an upgradeable body, while gems change how they attack, all tied to a five-element system of strengths and weaknesses that sits at the center of every fight.
Exploration is first-person, step-by-step dungeon crawling past landmarks, traps and hidden shortcuts, and random encounters come less often than in many crawlers, which keeps things moving. Lose to a boss and the game even shows your odds of winning with your current setup, a smart touch that tells you whether to grind or rethink your strategy.
Critics were lukewarm on the story and the budget presentation, but the deep customization and brisk battles won over players who love tinkering with a party. That makes MeiQ a curious, offbeat entry in the Vita's long shelf of Japanese dungeon crawlers, a game about building the perfect robot and then letting it take the hits.
"Key Features: - Labyrinths of Possibility! Navigate challenging maps and puzzles in this first-person dungeon-crawler! - You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine! Pair your 3-person party with three different Guardians for a turn-based, dungeon-crawling battle system! - Advanced Robotics! Unique Guardian robots can be customized even further with different parts and crystals to enhance their abilities! - Elemental Enemies! Strategize attacks between your humans and Guardians and find the crack in your foe’s armor by exploiting their elemental weakness!"
