Item Description
"Deeds, not words" was the motto of Megaforce, Hal Needham's 1982 action film about an elite international strike force riding high-tech combat motorcycles, and the Atari 2600 tie-in gives you the keys to one of them. Released by 20th Century Fox's game division the same year as the movie, Megaforce puts you on the armed Moto-Fighter, racing across the desert to protect the democratic nation of Sardoun from enemy attack.
It plays as a side-scrolling shooter in the vein of the 2600 Defender. The Moto-Fighter can take to the air, and its weapon changes with where you are: on the ground your shots angle downward, while in the air you fire straight ahead. Enemy aircraft sweep in to bomb Sardoun if you let them past, ground rockets have to be destroyed before they launch, and your goal is to destroy the black towers of the Enemy Headquarters. The twist is fuel. The Moto-Fighter burns a gallon every second, so you are constantly weighing a detour to blast a fuel depot for more against pressing on toward the enemy base. Depots can release prizes, from extra fuel to an extra Moto-Fighter, and a practice level with no enemy fire lets you learn the terrain.
The film, starring Barry Bostwick as Ace Hunter, became a cult favorite largely for its gloriously over-the-top hardware, including its famous flying motorcycle, and the game captures a little of that early-'80s gadget fantasy. For collectors of movie tie-ins, fans of the film, or anyone exploring Fox's ambitious first run of Atari cartridges, Megaforce is a fun and slightly kitschy slice of the era.
