A space colony is falling toward Earth, and the clock is already running. Mega Man X5 opens with Sigma's agent Dynamo hijacking the colony Eurasia and infecting it with a virus that sends it on a collision course with the planet. From there, every stage you take on eats into the time left before impact, which gives this entry an urgency no earlier X game had attempted.
The Maverick Hunters have two ways to stop the disaster: blast Eurasia apart with the giant Enigma cannon, or fly a space shuttle straight into it. Parts recovered from defeated Mavericks improve the odds of each plan, and you decide when to take the shot, so the game keeps asking a nervy question: take the shot now, or risk one more mission first?. Dynamo, a cocky mercenary with a big grin and a bigger sword, keeps turning up to waste your precious time. X and Zero are both playable from the start, and X can collect two new armor sets: the bird-like Falcon Armor with its limited free flight, and the heavy Gaea Armor. Zero carries the parts back to X rather than wearing them, and has his own reward waiting in the form of the Black Zero armor. New allies also join the Hunters here, including the navigator Alia, the mechanic Douglas and the commander Signas.
North American players got the strangest roll call in the series, because the English localization named the eight Mavericks after members of Guns N' Roses. Grizzly Slash, Axle the Red, Duff McWhirlpool and Squid Adler are all part of the lineup, a tribute picked by voice actress Alyson Court. Later re-releases switched to translations of the Japanese names, so these are the names you will only find in the original.
X5 was conceived as the finale of the X series, and it plays like one. The story builds to a showdown between X and a virus-infected Zero, and the branching endings carry real emotional weight. Capcom went on to make X6 anyway, but X5 is where the original arc was meant to close, and its mix of time pressure, two-hero play and high-stakes storytelling gives it a character no other X game shares.
Mega Man returns for more wild action in MEGA MAN X5. This time around, terrorists have attacked an asteroid colony and turned off its artificial gravity. Now, it is up to Mega Man and his friend Zero to defeat the terrorists, turn the gravity on, and keep the colony from crashing into the Earth. The gameplay is what fans of the series have come to expect: Mega Man must use his blasters and bombs to make his way through eight levels of running, jumping, and shooting action. If you decide to play as Zero, you will have to use a plasma sword and some cunning to get through the same levels. In either case, the characters will have to face tough bosses that have unique abilities. Once a boss is defeated, Mega Man and Zero can utilize the boss's talents. Only Mega Man and Zero can save the colony and the Earth in MEGA MAN X5.
