Item Description

The Battle Network saga ends with Lan Hikari as the new kid in town. His father's job transfer moves the family away from ACDC Town to Cyber City, a showcase for technological experimentation, where Lan makes new friends at school and MegaMan.EXE finds an unfamiliar Net full of new Navis and nastier threats. Buried in that network are two legendary Cybeasts, Gregar and Falzar, and in this version it is Falzar, the winged one, that ends up sealed inside MegaMan himself.

That power becomes Beast Out, the mechanic that gives the Cybeast versions their identity. MegaMan can unleash Falzar's form mid-battle for three turns, transforming his appearance and his attacks, but pushing past the counter triggers Beast Over and leaves him exhausted and hobbled for the rest of the fight. It sits on top of the new Cross System, which replaces the Soul Unison of the fourth and fifth games: complete an ally Navi's mission, earn a Navi Link, and MegaMan can take on that Navi's form for an entire battle without sacrificing a chip, as long as he avoids a hit from its elemental weakness. Crosses and Beast Out can even stack, which gives a well-built folder some spectacular options.

Falzar's Crosses, boss fights and Navi chip families come from SpoutMan, TomahawkMan, TenguMan, GroundMan and DustMan, a lineup you will not find as Crosses in Gregar, and even the Operator Navi contest ends differently here, with DustMan waiting in the final round. Enemy formations, chip codes and Cybeast story events all follow the version too. Dr. Wily and WWW return for one last scheme, Colonel.EXE and Iris.EXE carry some of the saga's most affecting moments, and an epilogue jumps 20 years ahead to show where everyone ended up.

Critics in 2006 noted how familiar the formula had become, but for anyone already hooked on Battle Network that familiarity is the point: six games of refinement left the grid battles as fast and flexible as they ever got. Back in the day, linking up with a friend's Gregar cartridge was how players traded for version-exclusive chips. Pick Falzar if the winged Cybeast and the Spout, Tomahawk, Tengu, Ground and Dust Crosses are the set you want to master, and you have the last chapter of Lan and MegaMan.EXE's story on the hardware it was made for.
