Before Battle Network meant six games, an anime and a decade of carefully tuned chip folders, it meant a kid named Lan Hikari, a handheld PET and the little blue program who lives inside it. Capcom's 2001 Game Boy Advance original pulled Mega Man out of the robot-master wars and dropped him into a near future where ovens, school computers and city systems are all wired to the network, and where the danger comes from computer viruses rather than robot masters. MegaMan.EXE is Lan's NetNavi, part partner and part best friend, and whenever Lan jacks him in, the fight moves inside the machine.
The battle system is the reason the series lasted. Fights take place on a grid split between MegaMan's three-by-three side and the enemy's, and they play out in real time: you slide between panels, pepper viruses with the MegaBuster, and every time the Custom Gauge fills you pause to pick Battle Chips from a random hand drawn from your folder. Chips carry letter codes, so sending several into battle at once means planning around matching codes or matching chips, and shaping a 30-chip folder from the 175-plus chips on offer becomes a game inside the game. It is part card game, part action game and part RPG, and nothing else on the GBA quite plays like it.
The story keeps things close to home. The WWW crime organization, led by Dr. Wily, keeps sabotaging the everyday technology of ACDC Town, so the dungeons are household appliances, classroom networks and municipal systems, and the bosses are rival Navis such as FireMan, ElecMan and WoodMan. Lan's friends bring their own partners into the story, from Mayl and Roll.EXE to Dex and GutsMan.EXE, while the cool, aloof Chaud and ProtoMan.EXE set up one of the series' longest-running rivalries.
This first entry is leaner than everything that followed. Later games layered on Style Changes, the Navi Customizer and much more, but here the design is at its most direct: a folder, a buster and your own reflexes. Playing it on a Game Boy Advance means meeting Lan and MegaMan.EXE exactly as players did in 2001, at the starting point of a series that grew into six mainline games, the Rockman.EXE anime and the Star Force follow-up.
In the future, a young net-battler named Lan, boots his 'personal exploration terminal' (PET) and prepares to hack into the network to battle net crime. Lan's PET is no ordinary network navigator. It's Mega Man.EXE, the cyber-identity, which infiltrates the crime-ridden network to battle destructive computer viruses. Defeat viruses in real time and collect Battle Chips program data, containing valuable weapons data and critical system info. Collect over 175 Battle Chips to help Lan and Mega Man.EXE restore peace and order to the network.
