Forget the eight Robot Masters and the boss select screen. Mega Man 64 is the Nintendo 64 version of Mega Man Legends, the Blue Bomber's first full 3D adventure, and despite a title that suggests another numbered sequel, it is something far more unusual: a sunny, open-world action RPG with a whole island to explore.
In a future where the oceans cover nearly everything, Mega Man Volnutt is a Digger, a treasure hunter who scours ancient ruins for refractors that power the world. After his family's airship, the Flutter, crash-lands on Kattelox Island, he finds himself caught between a mystery buried under the island and the Bonne family, a gang of air pirates led by the irresistible Tron Bonne, her brother Teisel, baby Bon and a crew of tiny, loyal Servbots. Roll Caskett and her grandfather Barrell anchor the story, and their little monkey companion Data has more to do with the plot than he lets on.
Kattelox works like a real place, with a city to wander, shops and citizens to help, and side jobs to pick up between dungeon runs. Beneath the streets lie sprawling ruins full of Reaverbots, ancient guardians that you lock on to and blast with the Mega Buster. The parts and junk you dig up go back to Roll, who can build them into new special weapons, and Buster upgrades let you tune your shot for power, range and rate of fire. Cutscenes run in the game's own engine with plenty of voice acting, so the N64 version keeps the charm of the original's cast intact, and players can switch the default controls to a turning setup with strafing on the analog stick.
Mega Man Legends grew into a cult favorite, spinning off a Tron Bonne game of its own and a sequel, and fans still lament the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 in 2011, which left the story unfinished. Mega Man 64, released in North America in early 2001, is the only time the series officially appeared on a Nintendo console, which makes this cartridge the way to experience Volnutt's adventure on Nintendo hardware.

About the game
Mega Man Volnutt is the game's playable character. Mega Man Volnutt is a "Digger", a person in charge of investigating ruins from a flooded Earth. During his journey with his friends, their ship crashes in Kattelox Island, where Mega Man decides to confront pirates who are attacking it to obtain the its hidden treasure. As an action roleplaying game, Mega Man Legends's gameplay is very different from the ones of the original series despite sharing a few elements.
