Item Description

December 7, 1941. You wake below decks aboard the USS California as the first bombs fall on Pearl Harbor, and Medal of Honor: Rising Sun spends its opening minutes throwing you through a burning ship and out into a harbor in chaos. Critics who disagreed about plenty else in this game all agreed on that opening, and it remains one of the most memorable starts of any World War II shooter of its era.

You play Marine Corporal Joseph Griffin through the Pacific War. In the Philippines he reunites with his younger brother Donnie, a demolition engineer, and the story turns personal when Donnie goes missing. From there it is the night raid on Guadalcanal's airfield, the hunt for the artillery gun nicknamed Pistol Pete, and then a jump into the OSS for clandestine work: infiltrating a summit in Singapore alongside OSS agent Harry Tanaka, exploring temples in Burma and chasing a gold train through Thailand as a Japanese plot to move a fortune in plundered gold comes into focus.

EA Los Angeles built a two-player cooperative campaign that follows nearly the whole story in split-screen, something few console shooters of 2003 offered, plus offline multiplayer for up to four players with optional AI bots. Christopher Lennertz's sweeping orchestral score drew some of the game's warmest praise, and between missions the game teaches real history through archival footage and unlockable interviews with Pacific veterans.

A planned sequel starring Donnie was cancelled, so Rising Sun is the only full chapter of the Griffin brothers' war. It sold well enough on GameCube to return in Nintendo's Player's Choice line, and next to Frontline it is the series' boldest swing at the Pacific, a great couch co-op shooter for two.
