Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Stomping a BattleTech war machine through a battlefield while missiles streak overhead is not something most people expected from a Nintendo DS cartridge in 2006, and that ambition is what makes MechAssault: Phantom War worth a look. Published by Majesco and developed by Backbone Entertainment, the studio behind the well-regarded DS version of Age of Empires, it carries Microsoft's Xbox mech-combat series onto a Nintendo handheld.

The twist is the pilot. You play a tech warrior, a MechWarrior who can neurohack, which means climbing out of the cockpit in battle armor to hack terminals or commandeer another machine. Leaving the safety of all that armor in the middle of a firefight to seize a bigger, meaner machine is the kind of gamble that keeps the tension high, and it gives battles a rhythm no other mech game on the system offered. Back in the cockpit, the action plays out in third person on the top screen while the second screen keeps the tactical picture close at hand.

A roster of mechs, each with its own balance of speed, armor and firepower, lets you pick between nimble scouts and lumbering walls of missiles. The campaign moves fast, with explosive set pieces and enemies that like to swarm, and it never loses sight of the series' simple pleasure: everything on the map can be blown up. Local wireless multiplayer lets DS owners square off mech against mech, which is where the game's arcade roots shine.

Phantom War is the only handheld MechAssault and the last game to carry the name, closing out a short series that began on the original Xbox. It packs the feel of those games onto two small screens: a short, loud campaign and head-to-head battles that can keep a room full of DS owners fighting.
