Item Description

Mass Effect 2 kills Commander Shepard in its opening minutes. The Normandy is torn apart by an unknown ship, Shepard is lost to space, and two years later the pro-human organization Cerberus brings the commander back through the Lazarus Project. It is an audacious way to start a sequel, and BioWare spends the rest of the game proving it was the right call.

The Illusive Man, voiced by Martin Sheen, has a job for you: the Collectors are abducting entire human colonies, and the only way to stop them is a mission through the Omega 4 Relay that no ship has ever survived. So Mass Effect 2 becomes a recruitment story. You assemble a team aboard the new Normandy SR-2, from returning friends Garrus and Tali to newcomers like the salarian scientist Mordin, the volatile biotic Jack, the krogan Grunt, the assassin Thane, the justicar Samara and the geth Legion. Each has a loyalty mission that digs into who they are, and those personal stories are where the game shines brightest.

Combat is sharper and faster than the first game, with tighter cover shooting, streamlined weapons and regenerating health, and conversations gained Paragon and Renegade interrupts that let you cut in at the perfect moment, sometimes with a punch. Choices carry forward too: a save imported from Mass Effect reshapes characters and events here, and decisions made here ripple into Mass Effect 3. Jack Wall's music gives it a moody, cinematic edge.

Then comes the suicide mission, a finale that turns every upgrade you bought, every loyalty you earned and every assignment you hand out into life or death for your crew. Anyone can die, including Shepard, and few endings in the genre feel so completely earned. It swept awards in 2010 and is widely ranked among the finest RPGs ever made. On Xbox 360, it is the middle chapter of the trilogy at its very best, the story that turned Shepard's crew into family.
