Item Description

A living prison has swallowed an entire city, and it is still growing. Mary Skelter: Nightmares, released in Japan in October 2016 as Kangokutō Mary Skelter, drops you inside the Jail, a malignant being that consumes everything around it and spawns Marchens, twisted monsters that were once people and animals. At its center rises a tower that might lead back to the surface, and climbing it is the only way out.

Jack and Alice escape their cells with help from Red Riding Hood, one of the Blood Maidens, a band of fairy-tale-named girls with powers no ordinary person could match. Blood is the core of Compile Heart's battle system. Skills, critical hits, weakness exploits and overkills splash enemy blood across the Maidens and fill a gauge toward Massacre Mode, a powered-up state with boosted stats and a special Massacre Skill. Absorb too much, though, and Corruption builds until a Maiden tips into Blood Skelter, a rampage that attacks friend and foe alike. Licking up spatter fuels Blood Soul skills but drains the gauge, so every fight is a balancing act, and Jack, who cannot attack at all, guards the Maidens and can pull Alice back from the brink.

Exploration is classic first-person, step-by-step dungeon crawling with traps, treasure and portals, but the Nightmares keep it from ever feeling safe. These invincible pursuers can appear anywhere, even in the middle of a battle, and hunt the party until you break enough of their body parts to buy time or put enough distance between you. Alice's Rabbit Holes work as portable save points and a quick route back to the party's library hub, job classes change each Maiden's outfit along with her role, and the gloomy, horror-tinged character art stands apart from much of the studio's catalog.

Reviews landed in the mostly favorable range, and the game found enough of an audience to earn a sequel, Mary Skelter 2. This is the Japanese-language original release that started the series, a natural piece for an import collection alongside the Vita's other niche Japanese dungeon crawlers.
