Item Description

Fifty-six fighters, three-person teams and a screen that regularly disappears under hyper combos: Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes is crossover excess at its finest. Capcom threw X-Men, Avengers and Street Fighter regulars into the same arena with Mega Man, Strider Hiryu and a host of deep-cut favorites, then added three originals of its own, Amingo, Ruby Heart and SonSon. The result is pure spectacle, and still one of the most celebrated 2D fighters ever made.

The jump to three-on-three tag is what gives the game its personality. Each character has three assist types, ranging from projectiles to healing moves, so building a team means thinking about who calls in which helper, not just who hits hardest. Matches swing wildly as teams combine assists, air combos and tag-in supers, and competitive players turned characters like Magneto, Storm, Sentinel and Cable into tournament legends. The controls were streamlined to four attack buttons and two assist buttons, and the Xbox controller's six face buttons give every one of them a home.

On console, the arcade's unlock system became the Secret Factor shop, where points earned through normal play buy hidden characters, stages and alternate colors, giving solo players a reason to keep grinding. The jazzy soundtrack split critics at the time and has since become part of the game's legend among fans.

The Xbox version reached North America in 2003 and is an honest port of a complicated legacy: it plays the same fighting game, but the Xbox Live support Capcom had promised never materialized, and critics scored it below the Dreamcast original. What makes it appealing today is the history around it. After this game, Capcom's Marvel license lapsed and the series went quiet until Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in 2011, so the original Xbox release is the Microsoft-console chapter of that era, ready to play on the hardware it was made for.

About the game

Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes is the fourth game in the Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games. The player's controls were simplified to make the gameplay more accessible to the wider audience of casual players and the button configuration was trimmed down to 4 main buttons and 2 assist buttons. The game also features a different air-combo system and 3 on 3 tag, compared to the 2 on 2 tag from previous games in the series.
