Three fighters per side, fifty-six characters on the select screen and almost no rules about who belongs on the same team: Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes is crossover excess pushed as far as it would go. Spider-Man can tag in alongside Mega Man and Ryu, Strider Hiryu can share a squad with Wolverine and Chun-Li, and the screen regularly erupts into hyper combos big enough to swallow the whole stage. The earlier crossovers were two-on-two affairs; this one went to three-on-three, and the result is one of the loudest, fastest fighting games ever put on a disc.
The controls were trimmed for accessibility, with four attack buttons and two dedicated assist buttons, yet the depth underneath is enormous. Each character waiting on your bench can be called in for an assist, and picking the right partner for the right moment is half the battle. Air combos send fights skyward, team hyper combos chain all three fighters' supers together, and a snapback can knock an opponent's point character out and force their partner in. Capcom added a handful of originals too, including the pirate captain Ruby Heart, the monkey hero SonSon and the cactus-like Amingo, with the towering Abyss waiting at the end of the arcade run. Detailed 2D sprites fight in front of 3D backgrounds, and the jazzy, lounge-flavored soundtrack is instantly recognizable to anyone who spent time in an arcade at the turn of the millennium.
It began life in 2000 on Sega's NAOMI arcade hardware before coming home, and this PlayStation 2 release followed in 2002. For more than a decade it was a fixture of the competitive scene, a centerpiece at major tournaments where famously dominant teams built around Magneto, Storm and Sentinel turned matches into blistering displays of speed. Its balance was never tidy, and that wildness is part of the legend: the game rewards creativity, nerve and practice in a way few fighters have matched.
On the PlayStation 2 it is prime couch-versus material, the kind of game that turns a casual evening into an impromptu bracket. Even people who never touched a fight stick recognize the characters, and anyone who learns the assist system discovers a fighter with near-bottomless room to grow. This is the crossover that set the template for every Marvel vs. Capcom game that followed, and a centerpiece for a PS2 fighting game shelf.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes is the fourth game in the Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games. The player's controls were simplified to make the gameplay more accessible to the wider audience of casual players and the button configuration was trimmed down to 4 main buttons and 2 assist buttons. The game also features a different air-combo system and 3 on 3 tag, compared to the 2 on 2 tag from previous games in the series.
