Snow is falling on Harlem, the bodega cat is waiting at the corner store, and the new Spider-Man still isn't sure he's ready. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales picks up after Insomniac Games' 2018 hit, with Peter Parker leaving New York for a few weeks and trusting his protégé to watch over the city during the holidays. It launched alongside the PlayStation 5 in 2020 and quickly became the console's first must-play showcase: a tighter, more personal adventure told in a Manhattan decked out for winter.
Miles moves differently from Peter, and the game makes you feel it. His bio-electric Venom powers let him charge up punches, slams and blasts that scatter whole groups of enemies, while his camouflage turns him invisible for a few precious seconds to reset a fight or pick off guards from the rafters. Web-swinging keeps the series' wonderful sense of momentum, now with Miles' own swagger in the animations, and side activities arrive through Ganke's Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man app, where Harlem residents post the everyday favors and emergencies that make the neighborhood feel lived in. A skill tree, new gadgets and a closet of unlockable suits, including one inspired by Into the Spider-Verse, keep the progression rolling.
The story is where Miles earns his place. An energy war between the Roxxon corporation and a high-tech gang called the Underground, led by the masked Tinkerer, lands right on his doorstep and tangles up the people he loves most: his mother Rio, who is running for city council, his best friend Ganke and his uncle Aaron. It is a story about family, community and figuring out what kind of hero you want to be, and it gives Miles the same grounded, heartfelt treatment that made Insomniac's take on Peter so memorable.
Built to show off new hardware, it loads almost instantly, offers ray-traced reflections that glint off icy skyscraper windows, and uses the DualSense controller to add a jolt to every Venom strike. It is considerably shorter than the 2018 game, which works in its favor: the campaign is focused, the city is dense with things to do, and it leads straight into Marvel's Spider-Man 2, where Miles and Peter share the spotlight. This is the game that turned Miles from sidekick into co-headliner, and it is a joy to swing through Harlem with him.
