Item Description

Few anime of the late 1990s wanted it both ways as badly as Martian Successor Nadesico. Xebec's series sent a battleship full of oddballs into a war against the mysterious Jovian Lizards, then spent half its running time mocking giant-robot clichés and the other half making you care about the people on board. Its hero, Akito Tenkawa, would rather be a cook than a pilot. Its captain, Yurika Misumaru, is a gifted tactician with no sense of personal space. And its youngest bridge officer, Ruri Hoshino, sums up the adults around her with a deadpan "baka bakka." Sega's 1997 Saturn game, released in Japan as Kidou Senkan Nadesico: Yappari Saigo wa "Ai ga Katsu"?, arrived just weeks after the TV run wrapped, while the show was at the peak of its popularity.

The subtitle, which asks whether love wins in the end, tells you where the game's heart is. Play moves between adventure scenes aboard the Nadesico, where Akito walks the ship, talks with the crew and builds his relationships through menu commands, and battle segments that carry the story forward chapter by chapter. The romance is the real hook. The series always had more heroines circling Akito than he knew what to do with, and here the question of who he grows closest to is yours to steer, which makes it a very different way to spend time with this crew than simply rewatching the episodes.

The Saturn was the natural home for a release like this. In late-90s Japan it was the console of choice for anime adventures and character-driven games, and its 2D strengths show in large, expressive character art that captures the show's look. There is a lot of Japanese text, so reading ability, or at least a strong memory of the series, makes the jokes and the relationships land; the presentation and the familiar faces carry plenty on their own.

It is a snapshot of Nadesico at its hottest moment, a year before The Prince of Darkness took the story somewhere much bleaker, and a lovely import to shelve beside a Saturn collection's other anime-era favorites. If you have ever argued about whether Akito belonged with Yurika, this is where the argument becomes interactive.
