Item Description

Mario has been playing tennis since the Virtual Boy, and Mario Tennis Open is Camelot's handheld take on the formula that made the Nintendo 64 original a party staple. It was the first new Mario Tennis on a portable since Power Tour on the Game Boy Advance, and it is built around one clever idea: Chance Shots.

As a rally builds, glowing colored zones appear on the court, each one signaling which shot to play. Step into the zone and hit the matching swing, whether topspin, slice, flat, lob or drop shot, and the ball rockets off the racket with extra power or a wicked curve. That turns every point into a quick read-and-react puzzle, and it gives skilled players a real edge. The touch screen offers one-tap shot buttons for newcomers, while button purists can use the classic combinations, and tilting the system switches the camera to a dramatic view from behind your player.

The single-player game runs through a series of tournament cups across Mushroom Kingdom courts with their own surfaces and personality, and you can take the court as Mario, Bowser and the rest of the roster or as your own Mii, unlocking rackets and outfits that adjust its stats. The Special Games are the cherry on top. Super Mario Tennis has you rallying against a wall that scrolls through the original Super Mario Bros., hitting coins and enemies with the ball, while Ring Shot, Galaxy Rally and Ink Showdown each put a playful spin on the basics.

Online matchmaking ended with the 3DS network, but local multiplayer and the full single-player game remain. Quick to pick up and surprisingly tactical, it is a smart, pocketable chapter in Camelot's long Mario Tennis run, and the Super Mario Tennis challenge alone is a treat for anyone who grew up with the NES.
