Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Waluigi was born for this game, quite literally. Camelot created Wario's lanky, scheming rival specifically to serve as his doubles partner in Mario Tennis, and the purple-clad troublemaker has been part of the Mushroom Kingdom ever since. That alone would earn the cartridge a footnote in Nintendo history, but the game around him is the real reason critics fell for it.

Camelot, fresh off Mario Golf, built a control scheme that fits seven different shots onto two buttons. Topspin and slice each get stronger when you tap twice, mixing the buttons in different orders produces lobs and drop shots, pressing both together unleashes a smash, and holding a button before contact charges up a harder strike. It takes minutes to rally and much longer to master. The sixteen-player roster splits into types such as power, speed, technique and the tricky players, so a heavy Bowser serve plays nothing like Boo's curving, floating returns, while Daisy, Birdo, Shy Guy and Paratroopa round out a wonderfully odd lineup.

Tournament play unlocks new characters and courts as you win cups, and Exhibition is the place for four-player doubles, where Mario Tennis is at its loudest and best. Three special modes add variety: Ring Shot, where the goal is to hit the ball through rings for points, Piranha Challenge, where Piranha Plants fire balls at you, and Bowser Stage, an item-filled match on Bowser's own court that plays like a tennis-flavored Mario Kart. The cartridge was also built to link with the Game Boy Color Mario Tennis through the Transfer Pak, carrying handheld characters to the N64 with their stats intact and sending experience back, a feature later digital re-releases left behind.

The N64 version scored a 91 on Metacritic and helped establish Camelot as Nintendo's sports specialist for decades to come. Every Mario Tennis since has refined the idea, but few have matched the clean, two-button elegance of the original, and none of them can claim Waluigi's first serve.
