Swing the Wii Remote like a bat, snap it forward to fire a pitch, and the Mushroom Kingdom's oldest rivalries start playing out nine innings at a time. Mario Super Sluggers, the Wii follow-up to the GameCube's Mario Superstar Baseball, is arcade baseball with Nintendo's whole cast in the lineup, tuned so a first-timer can make contact on the first pitch while a regular learns to build a balanced roster and save a captain's star power for the at-bat that matters.
Team captains carry their own Star Swings and Star Pitches, flashy special moves that bend the rules of physics in ways only a Mario sports game would allow, and they turn every close game into a question of when to cash them in. Exhibition games let you set the number of innings, switch those star moves on or off, and toggle items that can be thrown at fielders, so a match can be a straight ballgame or full-blown Mushroom Kingdom chaos with friends crowded around the screen.
The single-player Challenge mode is where Sluggers breaks from its predecessor. Instead of picking a captain, you start as Mario and explore overhead maps of the Baseball Kingdom built around each captain's home turf, recruiting teammates by clearing objectives rather than simply winning games, collecting coins to spend on items, and building toward showdowns with Bowser Jr. and Bowser, who crashed the Baseball Kingdom's party in the first place. Watching the roster fill in one recruit at a time gives the mode a real sense of discovery.
Developed by Now Production and published by Nintendo in 2008, Mario Super Sluggers was the Wii's only Mario baseball game, and it gave the console a bright, easygoing multiplayer staple that plays as well with a family as with a group of competitive friends. It is a cheerful, unmistakably Nintendo piece for a Wii shelf, and a reminder of the era when Mario seemed to have a sport for every season.
Mario Super Sluggers, the sequel to Mario Superstar Baseball, continues the arcade-style gameplay of Mario sports games. Mario and friends are invited to the Baseball Kingdom to play games against each other. When Bowser hears this, he immediately interrupts the party. There are several game modes to choose from like in the previous game. In Exhibition mode, players play a single game against each other. Players can choose different options such as how many innings to play, if captains can use star powers (each captain has a different star swing and pitch), and toggle error items off and on (error items can be thrown at fielders). The single-player Challenge mode is different this time around. Instead of choosing a team captain, players start with Mario who must find teammates to take on Bowser Jr. and Bowser. Teammates aren't unlocked by playing a game rather they only join the team by clearing certain objectives. Most of the action takes place on areas with an overhead perspective; each area is based around a team captain. Each captain has a special ability to find teammates and coins, which are used to buy items to aid in the quest or in a game against Bowser Jr.
